What to expect in The Netherlands during the holiday season.

“It’s the most wonderful time of the year!”

Also in The Netherlands the holiday season has started! Apart from Christmas, the other festivities differ a little from other countries. You could read about this in my other blog about the holiday season in NL. In this blog you can find a couple of tips for what to visit and what to expect in the Netherlands during this time of the year. Continue reading!

The holiday season has started!

1. Local Christmas events

During your visit you will experience that many local events are organized. Two examples are Lichtjesavond (the night of lights) in Delft and an event in Utrecht called Knuss Winterfest. But there are lots more! Often the events start with the placement of a huge Christmas tree in the city center. This can be accompanied by live music, a christmas market, or even more like turning the whole city in a feast of lights like what is done in Delft! It is really worth a visit.

Find out which events take place at the tourist information office or website

For more information about what will happen in the place you stay, you can best visit the local tourist information website, or the tourist information office when you have arrived already at your destination. Information about the events in Delft you can find for example on this website. Information about the winterevent in Utrecht you can find on this website.

2. Fireworks at sea

In the Hague, or actually at sea, you can experience a really special event during the Holiday season: a fireworks show! Not only at New Years Eve, but on multiple dates through December this event takes place. For more specific information visit the website of the organization or the Facebook page of the event.

3. Christmas city

There is one city in The Netherlands which has the name Christmas city around this time of the year! You will have to travel to the most southern part of the country, since there is where this city Valkenburg is located. It will be worth the hours of travel. The entire city is decorated in Christmas style, and one special feature is that you can visit Christmas markets in a cave! If you want to know more about this, or if you are just curious about how a christmas market in a cave looks, then visit the official website of the Christmas city here.

“…and everything nice”

I always enjoy this time of the year. I like the Christmas atmosphere and the time spent with family and I hope that with my tips you can enjoy a nice stay here during the holiday season. If you have any questions, or if you would like to share your experience with one of the mentioned events, or just with your experience of the Holiday season in The Netherlands in general, please don’t hesitate to post a comment!
