Maastricht is a city in The Netherlands which isn’t that famous as Amsterdam. However, if you are visiting the Netherlands, you really should visit this awesome city! It is one of the most ancient cities of The Netherlands, and, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful cities with a very special atmosphere. If you are looking on your map and wonder where you can find Maastricht: search for Belgium and then look to the right to Germany…yes! There it is. Maastricht is in the south of the Netherlands, in a region between Belgium and Germany.
Just as every city also Maastricht has a couple of highlights. The church of St. Servaas is worth a visit, just as the place it is located on called ‘Vrijthof’. The Vrijthof is also where you can find the theatre, and the museum about the history of Maastricht. The ancient city wall around the characteristic city center is nice for a walk, and the city center is great for shopping and to have dinner as well! Maastricht is the city where you can visit a different cafe or restaurant every day of the year, that’s how many there are!
My advice for when you are looking for a nice restaurant in Maastricht are the ones in the side streets: when you are standing on the Vrijthof, take the small side street opposite to the St. Servaas church, and soon you will find a couple of nice places to eat!
Fun to visit is the mill in the center, since yes, there is one! It is an old water mill called ‘Bisschopsmolen’, and you can visit it to see how it works. On top of that you can taste and buy nice cakes made of the meal created by it! (address: the Bisschopsmolen is located at Stenenbrug 1-3)
The area on the other side of the bridge called Wyck is also worth a visit. It has lots of nice tiny shops, and the ‘Hoge Brug’ which leads you back to the city center, gives you a nice overview over the city.
Did I already mention there is a large river flowing through Maastricht? It may be clear: there is lots to see and to enjoy in this aswesome city!
