Travel feelings pt 1: Saudade

Saudade Milano
Saudade: a deep emotional state of nostalgic or profound melancholic longing for an absent something or someone that one loves. Moreover, it often carries a repressed knowledge that the object of longing may never return. A stronger form of saudade may be felt towards people and things whose whereabouts are unknown, such as a lost lover, or a family member who has gone missing, moved away, separated or died. To travel is to miss
Some of you might know I like learning other languages. I see it as an enrichment of my own world. Last year I experienced this by learning a word what described my feelings back then better than I could ever describe in my own language! I am talking about the word “saudade” which is a Portuguese word. I realized that the more fantastic people I would get to know on a vacation, and the better places I would visit, the more ‘saudade’ I would feel afterwards. I see it as something positive though. Therefore I like the meaning which also is given to saudade: ‘the love that remains’. It is an intense feeling, and therefore I’m glad I found out about a language which contained a word to describe it.
