Contemporary architecture in Amsterdam.

history

…or does time actually stand still to some extend?

Contemporary architecture in Amsterdam

During your stay in Amsterdam you are obviously going for a walk through the city center.  I would do so too! That will give you an impression of the characteristic look this Dutch city already has for centuries. However, time doesn’t stand still, and yet there is also more to discover in Amsterdam, for example contemporary architecture!

IJ-dock

In the picture above you can see IJ-dock behind the historical sailing ship. IJ-dock is built in the last decade and was finalized in 2013. It contains a combination of apartments, offices and also a hotel! In hotel Room Mate Aitana, which is in one of the buildings of IJ-dock, you can book a room (starting from price 129,- euros).

Eye film institute

Literally an eyecatcher is the outstanding building of the EYE film institute. You can ofcourse watch movies here, but you can also visit the building just to watch the building! It contains a nice restaurant and an exposition about the history of film. The EYE is built in 2012 and is designed by the Austrian architects Roman Delugan and Elke Delugan-Meissl.

Muziekgebouw aan het IJ

Last but not least: on the other side of the river you can visit this building. The Muziekgebouw aan het IJ is built in 2005 and designed by 3xN, a Danish architect company. It is a concert hall with a diversity of possibilities. During summertime it is also a nice place for a drink or dinner in the restaurant Zouthaven which is located at the ground floor, and to enjoy the view you have from this side of the city.

Practical information

All these special pieces of architecture are easy to find. They are located nearby the city center! From the city center you have to walk to the other side of Amsterdam Central Station, and once you have done so, you will already see the IJ-dock on your left side, and the EYE in front of you accross the water. To reach EYE, you can use the free transport via the ferries which go every 5 minutes. On your right hand you will see the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ which is a 5 minutes walk from the Central Station.
