The most wonderful time of the year!
Also in The Netherlands the holiday season is starting! Apart from Christmas, the other festivities differ a little from other countries. In this blog you can read what to expect during a visit to NL in this time of the year! Now this might sound familiar to you, and that is right! Last year I posted this blog in which I gave you already tips and information! So if you want to know what I adviced last year (in short: christmas markets – where to go// sale shopping – when does it start // and all information about Sinterklaas of course!) then click on the link to read that blog. Continue reading here for new tips!
1. Local Christmas events
During your visit you will experience that there are organized many local events. Two examples are Lichtjesavond (the night of lights) on December 13 in Delft and an event in Utrecht called Knuss Winterfest starting on 9 December. But there are lots more! Mostly the events start with the placement of a giant Christmas tree in the city center. This can be accompanied by live music, a market, or special things like turning the whole city in a feast of lights like what is done in Delft! It is really worth a visit. For more information about what will happen in the place you stay, you can best visit the local tourist information website. Information about the events in Delft you can find for example here. And all the information you will need about the winterevent in Utrecht you can find on this website.
2. Fireworks at sea
This is a really special event: near The Hague, at Scheveningen at sea, you can watch a fireworks show! Not only at New Years Eve, but also in December on several dates this event will take place. For more specific information visit the website of the organization or the Facebook page of the event.
3. Christmas city
There is one city in The Netherlands which has the name Christmas city around this time of the year! You will have to travel to the most southern part of the country, since there is where Valkenburg is located. It will be worth your hours of travel. The entire city is decorated in Christmas style, and one special feature is that you can visit at least two Christmas markets in caves! If you want to know more about this, or if you are just curious about how a christmas market in a cave looks, then visit the official website of the Christmas city here.
And everything nice
I always really enjoy this time of the year. I like the Christmas atmosphere! I hope that with my tips you can enjoy a nice stay here during the Holiday season. If you have any questions, or if you would like to share your experience with one of the mentioned events or just with your experience of the Holiday season in The Netherlands in general, please don’t hesitate to post a comment!
